PROFILE OF MOST REV’D DR. JUSTICE O. AKROFI

 Son of John Ofori Akrofi, first a Catechist and later ordained priest and Mariam Ofori Akrofi, both natives of Larteh in the Akwapim district of Eastern Region. Born 29 October 1942 at Koforidua, he was educated at St. Peter’s Anglican Church School, Koforidua, Anglican Middle School, Sefwi-Ahwiaso, and Ghana Secondary School , Koforidua.

He studied also at Central Connecticut State University, USA (B.Sc. Social Studies & Teacher Education) M.Ed Guidance and Counseling , Yale University Divinity School (MDiv), Norwich State Hospital (Institutional Chaplaincy and Clinical Pastoral Education), Ecumenical Institute , Chateau de Bossey, Celigny , Switzerland (Diploma in Ecumenism). He was awarded D. Litt (Honoris Causa) in 2000 by Central Connecticut State University.

Ordained 19 December 1976, he served as Chaplain/ Tutor at the Anglican foundation, Adisadel College, Cape Coast (1976-1978); and as Resident Chaplain  of Accra Ridge Church (1978-1981) After that he was  appointed Provost of the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, Accra at  the youngish age of 39 years in  January 1982 and five years into his priesthood. Thence he was elected and consecrated Diocesan Bishop of Accra 8th September  1996 i.e after 14 years as Provost. He was elected and inducted Archbishop of the Church of the Province of  West Africa in 2004.  The Government of Ghana in 2006 confered on him the  national award of Companion of the Order of the Star of Volta

The decision making body of the Anglican Church of PNG (ACPNG), known as the Provincial Council has elected a new Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea.

The election took place at the Provincial Council Meeting which was held in Port Moresby on 11th June 2010.

The new Archbishop is the Rt. Reverend Joseph Kopapa who is the Bishop of Popondota Diocese. The ACPNG has five (5) Diocese and the Bishops from these Dioceses who are also members of the House of Bishops of the Province of PNG are eligible for election.

The Archbishop who is also the Primate of the Anglican Church of PNG is vested with powers within the Provincial Constitution and Cannons of 2001 to be the general authority, leader and steward of the Province of PNG. Amongst his duties, the Archbishop presides over the Provincial Council and House of Bishops. The Archbishop also plays the key representative of the Anglican Province of PNG in dealing with global Anglican Communion issues whose head is the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Archbishop Kopapa comes from Tufi District in Oro Province and is the fifth Archbishop since the Church’s independence from the Province of Australia. Archbishop Kopapa succeeds the former Primate Bishop James Ayong who retired in 2009.
